The sports hall at Gammel Hellerup Gymnasium was designed by BIG, the Bjarke Ingels Group, for a school in Hellerup, Denmark. It is sunk 5 meters (16.5 feet) below ground in the school courtyard. The sunken space covers 1,100 square meters (about 11,800 square feet).
Its soft vaulted roof is made of uniquely curved glulam beams, and the roof serves as both the inside and outside skin. The roof edge is a long social bench with a lattice design that lets daylight through. The roof geometry follows the mathematical formula for a ballistic arc, based on the path of a thrown handball.
The walls are bevelled concrete, and the floor decking is untreated oak. The benches are white enamel-coated steel with tiny LED lights beneath them. Solar panels around the existing school buildings provide heat for the hall. The sunken form supports the indoor climate and lowers environmental impact.
