The Franciscan Church stands in the Innere Stadt of Vienna and is dedicated to Saint Jerome. In 1589 the city ceded the empty convent of the Penitents, built from 1383 to 1387, to the Franciscans. Bonaventura Daum was the architect, and the Franciscans rebuilt the church, using old components. The groundbreaking was in 1603. Sources give the completion as 1607 or 1611. A monastery for 200 brothers was added in 1630.

The exterior is Renaissance and the interior is Baroque. It is Vienna's only Renaissance sacred building, and it still retains some Gothic elements. Andrea Pozzo designed the high altar in 1707, and the interior was finished around 1720.

The oldest organ in Vienna is here, a carved Baroque instrument by Johann Wockerl from 1642.
