The Franciscan Church stands in the old town of Salzburg and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. A first church was built on the site in the eighth century, and a fire in 1167 destroyed it. The central nave was begun in the late Romanesque style in 1208 and consecrated in 1221. A Gothic choir replaced the Romanesque one between 1408 and 1450, begun by Hans von Burghausen and completed by Stefan Krumenauer. A slender Gothic tower was added from 1468 to 1498.

The church ceased to be a parish church in 1635 and was ceded to the Franciscan Order in 1642. In the eighteenth century the interior was redone in the Baroque style, and Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach designed the altars, including the high altar of 1709 in red marble and gold.

A Late Gothic Madonna statue by Michael Pacher of Tyrol stands on the winged altar.
