The Franciscan Church stands at Františkánska Street 2 in the Old Town of Bratislava. It was built from 1280 to 1297 in the Gothic style and consecrated on March 24, 1297 by King Andrew III. A legend credits King Ladislaus IV of Hungary with building it to mark a victory over Ottokar II of Bohemia in 1278. In 1526 Ferdinand I was elected King of Hungary here.

Fires and earthquakes destroyed much of the original building, and the presbytery is the most notable surviving part. The church was converted to the Renaissance style in the seventeenth century and to the Baroque in the eighteenth. The main altar was built from 1720 to 1730, and the Rococo pulpit dates from 1756.

From the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries, Knights of the Golden Spur were created here.
