The Fondation Cartier pour l'Art Contemporain was founded in 1984 by the firm Cartier, with Alain Dominique Perrin as president. In 1994 it moved into a building by Jean Nouvel at 261 Boulevard Raspail in the 14th arrondissement of Paris, on the former site of the American Center for Students and Artists.
The Raspail building is glass, and its ground floor is about 26 feet (8 meters) high and glazed on all sides. A modern woodland garden by Lothar Baumgarten surrounds it. Nouvel drew plans for an Île Seguin site in 2011, but the foundation dropped them in 2014 in favor of expanding the Raspail premises.
The foundation relocated in 2025 to 2 place du Palais-Royal, in part of a listed building opposite the Louvre, and reopened on October 25, 2025. The new site covers more than 90,000 square feet (8,400 square meters). The collection holds over 1,500 works by more than 350 artists.
