Exploration Place in Wichita is a science museum designed by Moshe Safdie of Boston. A capital campaign began in 1992, and construction started in May 1997 and took about two and a half years. It opened in spring 2000. The article names no client, style or materials, and describes the nonprofit as funded by admissions, memberships, Sedgwick County and private donations.
The 100,000-square-foot (9,300 m2) building sits on 20 acres. Its Island Building stands between the Arkansas River and a reflecting pond, above the 100-year flood level. The roof peaks 70 feet (21 m) above the floor over the traveling exhibits space.
It has the largest dome theater in Kansas, with a 60-foot (18 m) screen, and a 140-seat science theater. Hours are daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with Thursdays until 8 p.m. Adults pay $21.
