The Equitable Building at 120 Broadway in Manhattan was designed by Ernest R. Graham of D. H. Burnham & Company, with Peirce Anderson as architect-in-charge, for the Equitable Office Building Corporation. Excavation began in June 1913 and the cornerstone was laid on April 30, 1914. The article gives completion dates of February 1 and May 1, 1915.
The Neoclassical building rises 555 feet (169 m) with penthouses, and the article gives 38 stories in the lead and 40 in the body. It has an H-shaped plan with two light courts. The lowest four stories are granite, and the upper stories are light gray brick with terracotta trim. It sits on 80 piers.
Ehrenkrantz, Eckstut & Whitelaw restored it in the 1980s, replacing terracotta ornament with glass-fiber reinforced plastic. Beyer Blinder Belle completed a renovation in 2019. The basement connects to three subway stations.
