Einsiedeln Abbey in the Swiss canton of Schwyz is a Benedictine monastery and pilgrimage site. The article credits Eberhard of Strasbourg with building the abbey and church in 934. The church was rebuilt from 1704 to 1719 under Abbot Maurus, and its Baroque decoration was finished in 1734 or 1735. It is one of the most important Baroque monastic sites.
The Chapel of Grace holds the Black Madonna and was rebuilt in a neoclassical style from 1815 to 1817. The lower church sits above the Chapel of the Saviour, making a sanctuary within a sanctuary. Pope John Paul II consecrated the high altar on June 15, 1984.
The library holds about 230,000 printed books and 1,230 manuscripts. About 40 monks live there, and the abbey runs a school and a winery.
