Edmund B. Hayes Hall stands at 3435 Main Street on the South Campus of the University at Buffalo. George F. Metzger and Cyrus K. Porter and Sons designed it, and it was built in 1874 to house the Insane Department of the Erie County Almshouse.
In 1893 it became a county hospital with 400 beds. The university acquired the land in 1909 and dedicated the renovated building on February 22, 1928, for classroom use. Chancellor Samuel Capen called it "the visual symbol of the University." The article gives its style as Colonial Revival and notes an attached bell tower.
Renovations costing $45 million ran from 2011 to 2016. The building is now home to the School of Architecture and Planning. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 21, 2016. The article does not give building materials.
