Edificio España at Plaza de España in Madrid was designed by Julián Otamendi, with José María Otamendi calculating the reinforced concrete structure, for Compañía Inmobiliaria Metropolitana. Construction began in 1948, and it opened in October 1953. The infobox lists Neo-Herrerian, Neo-Baroque and Art Deco, while the text puts Art Deco only in the interior.
The stepped building has 26 floors above ground and a facade about 490 feet (150 m) wide, clad in artificial stone. Heights are 351 feet (107 m) architectural and 384 feet (117 m) to the roof. The rear has five deep courtyards for light. Floor area is 830,000 square feet (77,000 m²).
A facade refurbishment ran from 2005 to 2010. Riu began conversion in October 2017, and Hotel Riu Plaza España reopened in August 2019 with 585 rooms. Heritage protection was lowered in 2014, but the front and side facades had to stay.
