The Design Museum in Kensington, London, occupies the Commonwealth Institute building of the 1960s, designed by Robert Matthew of Robert Matthew, Johnson-Marshall and Partners and listed Grade II*. John Pawson led the design team for the conversion, and Willmott Dixon Interiors carried out the fit-out. The article gives no construction dates for the 1960s building, and the infobox's 1989 date refers to the museum.

The article gives the style only for the earlier Shad Thames conversion, which it calls Modernist. It mentions a hyperbolic paraboloid roof and a 202-seat auditorium. Sir Terence Conran donated 17.5 million pounds in June 2011.

The museum opened on November 24, 2016, and won the 2018 European Museum of the Year Award. It has temporary exhibitions, a free permanent gallery, a reference library and learning facilities. The article gives no hours.
