Deichman Bjørvika is the main public library of Oslo, Norway. LundHagem and Atelier Oslo won the international competition for it in 2009, and it opened to the public on June 18, 2020. The client was Oslo municipality, and Scenario designed the interiors.
The library has 19,600 square meters (about 211,000 square feet) of gross area over five floors above ground and one below. Its upper floors cantilever, and one projection reaches nearly 20 meters (65 feet) over the plaza to shelter the entrance. The ground-floor facade is fully transparent, and three equal entrances face different directions.
Three diagonal light shafts carry daylight down from three roof skylights. The roof is folded for structural strength, and concrete surrounds the shafts. Alternating narrow insulated panels and glass make up the facade. Inside are three free-standing book towers and rooms for exhibitions and temporary installations.
