The current de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park opened on October 15, 2005. Herzog & de Meuron designed it with Fong & Chan Architects as principal architects, and Walter J. Hood designed the gardens. The Swiss firm won the commission in January 1999, beating Tadao Ando and Antoine Predock. The museum belongs to the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. The article gives no construction start or style.
The exterior is clad in 163,118 square feet (15,154 m2) of variably perforated and dimpled copper plates that will patina over time. Copper gardens and courtyards are cut into the top. The Hamon Observation Tower is 144 feet (44 m) tall with 360-degree views.
The building can move up to three feet (91 cm) in an earthquake, using ball-bearing plates and viscous dampers. The tower entry is free. The article gives no other hours.
