De Krijtberg is the popular name of the Church of Saint Francis Xavier at Singel 448 in Amsterdam. The Jesuits have kept a church on this site since 1654. A hidden church was replaced in 1677, and the present building was erected in 1881 and opened in 1883. Alfred Tepe was the architect.
The style is Neo-Gothic. Because space was limited, the church is unusually tall, with a monumental front and two pointed towers. The exuberant interior was made by the firm of Friedrich Wilhelm Mengelberg with members of the Guild of St. Bernulphus, and most of the original interior has survived. It includes a rood screen, an organ and the sanctuary.
Next door, Ignatius House opened in 1985 as a spirituality center and moved to its present location in 2000.
