The Daily News Building at 220 East 42nd Street was designed by Raymond Hood and John Mead Howells for the New York Daily News, under Joseph Medill Patterson. Groundbreaking was in September 1928, and the tower was completed on July 23, 1930. Harrison & Abramovitz designed an annex built from 1957 to 1960. The style is Art Deco, without Gothic ornament.
The tower is 476 feet (145 m) and 36 floors, with white-brick piers and dark brick spandrels. A granite entrance with carved lettering reading The News leads to a rotunda lobby with a rotating painted globe in a recessed pit. The text gives the globe as 12 feet across, while a footnote cites 17 feet.
The building became a National Historic Landmark in 1989, and the lobby a city landmark in 1998. The newspaper moved out in 1995. SL Green completed its purchase in 2002 for 265 million dollars. It is an office building. The article gives no hours.
