The Crazy Horse Memorial is a mountain carving under construction on Thunderhead Mountain in the Black Hills of South Dakota, about 17 miles (27 kilometers) from Mount Rushmore. The Polish-American sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski began it on June 3, 1948, at the request of the Lakota elder Henry Standing Bear. It accepts no federal or state funding.
The finished work is planned to be 641 feet (195 meters) long and 563 feet (172 meters) high. The outstretched arm will be 263 feet (80 meters) long. The head and face were dedicated in 1998. The face is about 87 feet (27 meters) high, against 60 feet (18 meters) for each head at Mount Rushmore.
The left hand was finished by 2024. Carving has moved to the horse's mane and the right shoulder, aided by a tower crane. The hand, arm, shoulder and top of the horse's head are expected by 2037. No overall completion date has been set.
