The City Palace in Udaipur, Rajasthan, stands on the east bank of Lake Pichola. Maharana Udai Singh II began it after moving his capital from Chittor, which was vulnerable to Mughal wars. Later Mewar rulers continued building for about 400 years. The text of the article says construction began in 1553, while the infobox gives 1559.

The façade is about 244 meters long and 30.4 meters high, and it is built mainly of granite and marble. Its zigzag corridors and linked courtyards were designed to deter surprise attacks. Interiors include mirror work, murals and silver work. Mor Chowk has three peacock figures made of colored glass.

Mewar merged into independent India in 1949. Parts of the complex have since become heritage hotels.
