Cîteaux Abbey, south of Dijon, was founded on March 21, 1098 by monks from Molesme led by Robert of Molesme, with support from Duke Odo I of Burgundy. The article names no architect or style. The great church was begun around 1140 and completed in 1193, and it became the Dukes of Burgundy's dynastic burial place.
Three buildings from the ancient period survive: a library finished in 1509 with a ribbed vault, the Définitoire with a groin vault, and the Lenoir building of 1771. They were listed as historic monuments in 1978. The article does not say what happened to the great church.
Raids in the Hundred Years' War struck the abbey several times, and soldiers sacked it in 1589. After the 1790 suppression it was sold and looted, and the buildings served as a sugar mill from 1824 to 1839. About 35 Trappist monks live there now.
