Cipanas Palace stands in Cipanas, West Java, about 64 miles (103 kilometers) from Jakarta, at an elevation of 3,609 feet (1,100 meters) at the foot of Mount Gede. The grounds cover about 64 acres. Construction began in 1740 under Governor-General Gustaaf Willem van Imhoff, who died at the villa in 1750.
The style is Old Indies, and the structure is wood. The main building was originally built of teak reinforced with cast iron. It has a living room, a dining room and a back porch. Behind it stand six pavilions named for Wayang characters, and the Bentol building stands on a slope above. The palace also has two bath houses fed by hot springs and a mosque.
Dutch Governors-General used it as a summer residence from 1926 to 1942. Sukarno held his wedding to Hartini here in 1953. It is now a retreat for the President or Vice President.
