The Church of the Holy Spirit stands in the grounds of the Sant'Orsola cemetery in Palermo. Archbishop Walter of the Mill founded it, with groundbreaking in 1173 and completion in 1178. It was a Cistercian monastery, entrusted to monks from the Calabrian Abbey of Sambucina. Its style is described as Arab-Norman and Gothic.

A donation from King William II of Sicily and his mother, Margaret, is said to have enriched the monastery's property, though the source calls for a citation. It is a Norman church of the Roman Rite, under the Archdiocese of Palermo.

On March 30, 1282, a popular uprising later called the Sicilian Vespers broke out in front of the church. That claim also needs a citation in the source.
