The Church of Saint Anthony of Lisbon stands on Rua das Pedras Negras, very close to Lisbon Cathedral. According to tradition it was built on the site where Saint Anthony was born in 1195, and a crypt marks the spot. A small chapel stood here in the early fifteenth century. It was rebuilt in the early sixteenth century under King Manuel I and rebuilt again from 1730 under King John V.

The 1755 earthquake destroyed it, except for the main chapel. Mateus Vicente de Oliveira designed the rebuilding, completed in 1767, in the Baroque-Rococo style. It is classified as a National Monument.

A statue of Saint Anthony by Soares Branco stands in the square in front. A procession leaves the church every June 13, as it has since 1755.
