Christchurch Art Gallery, or Te Puna o Waiwhetū, was designed by the Buchan Group for Christchurch City Council. The council bought the site in 1996 and launched a design competition in 1998. The gallery opened on May 10, 2003, replacing the Robert McDougall Art Gallery. The article names no style or materials beyond the foundation.

A concrete raft slab spreads earthquake forces across the site, though the earthquake damaged it. The sculpture Reason for Voyaging, by Graham Bennett and architect David Cole, stands on the forecourt.

After the 2010 and 2011 Canterbury earthquakes the building served as the Civil Defence headquarters. It reopened on December 19, 2015 after refurbishment. It holds its own collection and presents New Zealand and international shows. In 2022 Karen Stevenson gave 77 works by 32 artists, mostly Pacific art. The article gives no hours.
