The Chilehaus in Hamburg's Kontorhaus District was designed by Fritz Höger for the shipping magnate Henry B. Sloman, who made his fortune trading Chilean saltpeter. The infobox gives construction from 1921 to 1924, while the text says 1922 to 1924.
Höger's Brick Expressionism uses a reinforced concrete structure faced with about 4.8 million dark Oldenburg bricks and set on piles 52 feet (16 m) deep. The ten-story building spans Fischertwiete street, with a ship's-prow top, sharply angled facades and sculptural elements by Richard Kuöhl.
It was built during German hyperinflation at an estimated cost above 10 million reichsmark. The cellar was sealed against floods, with heating equipment in a floating caisson. UNESCO listed it in 2015 with the Speicherstadt and Kontorhaus District. It is an office building, and the article gives no visiting details.
