The Cheraman Juma Mosque in Kodungallur is often called the first mosque in India. A legend dates it to 629 and says Malik Bin Dinar founded it at the behest of a Chera king who converted to Islam. The article says historical research has found the story fictitious, and some scholars propose a 14th or 15th century date from its architecture. Several medieval travelers did not mention it.
It was rebuilt in 1568. The infobox gives its length as 200 feet (61 m) and its width as 79 feet (24 m). The article describes a Kerala-Islamic style with traditional Vastu shastra. In 1984, modern corridors and halls were added around the original building, hiding most of its exterior. A dome and four minarets were added in 1994.
A restoration in 2022 removed the dome and minarets. Hanging lamps hang inside, and A. P. J. Abdul Kalam visited in 2005.
