The Chengdu Science Fiction Museum stands on Jingrong Lake in the Science and Innovation New City, Pidu District, Chengdu. Zaha Hadid Architects designed it, with Patrik Schumacher leading the design. The client is Chengdu Science and Innovation City Investment and Development. Work ran from 2022 to 2023.
The building covers about 59,459 square meters (640,000 square feet) and seems to float above the lake. Fluid roof forms radiate from a central point to suggest a nebula. A sky-lit central atrium has a large window facing Xiling Mountain. The roof is sized to shade the glass facades in summer, and its canopy holds photovoltaic panels.
The program includes exhibition galleries, a theatre, a conference hall and education spaces. The museum will host the World Science Fiction Convention and the Hugo Awards. Rainwater is collected and filtered, and the design aims for China's three-star Green Building standard.
