Château de Candé near Tours began as a Renaissance house built by François Briçonnet, mayor of Tours and state treasurer, who bought the fief in 1499 on the site of an old fortress. He died before it was done, and his daughter Jeanne finished it in 1508. The article names no architect or materials.
Santiago Drake del Castillo bought it in 1853 and added a neo-Gothic north wing that tripled the living space, though the text elsewhere says later owners brought no major transformations. Charles and Fern Bedaux bought it in 1927 and modernized it with central heating, plumbing and an early private telephone, plus eight bedrooms with bathrooms. They added an 18-hole golf course, a tennis court and a gymnasium.
The Duke of Windsor and Wallis Simpson married here in 1937. Fern Bedaux left the château to the State in 1972, and the Indre-et-Loire council has held it since 1974. The article gives no hours or current use.
