Celje Cathedral is dedicated to the Prophet Daniel and has been the seat of the Diocese of Celje since 2006. It originally served as the church of an abbey on the edge of medieval Celje. A small basilica stood on the site by the twelfth century, and the present building replaced it in 1306. The rib-vaulted roof was created in 1379.
The style is Gothic, with a Gothic chapel of the Mater Dolorosa added in 1413, a later Baroque chapel and a Gothic Revival appearance from 1858. The nave has three aisles, and fifteenth-century frescoes decorate the ceilings. A carved wooden Pietà is the church's main treasure.
Bishop Hermann von Cilli died in Celje in 1421 and was buried in the church. Medieval and Renaissance gravestones line the interior and exterior walls.
