The Paul L. Cejas Building houses the architecture, landscape architecture and interior architecture departments of Florida International University. Bernard Tschumi Architects of New York won an invited competition in 1999 and worked with BEA International of Miami. The building was completed in 2003.
It is a complex of five connected structures: studios, an auditorium, a gallery, administrative offices and a workshop. Open-air catwalks link the first four, and Miami's mild climate lets most circulation happen outdoors. Precast concrete replaced the original steel frame because of budget problems.
The lecture hall, called the Red Generator, and the exhibition hall, called the Yellow Generator, have monumental stairs. The studio wing has a three-story glass wall on its north side. The composition recalls the Bauhaus in Dessau.
