Castle Howard was designed by John Vanbrugh, with Nicholas Hawksmoor assisting, for the 3rd Earl of Carlisle. The infobox says built 1701 to 1811, while the text says design began in 1699 and construction in 1701. Sir Thomas Robinson designed the Palladian West Wing, and Charles Heathcote Tatham completed the work in 1811.

It is English Baroque, with a contrasting Palladian west wing. A fire in 1940 destroyed the dome, central hall, dining room and east state rooms, and the dome was rebuilt in 1960 and 1961. The East Wing remains a shell. The article gives no dimensions for the house.

It stands 15 miles (24 km) north of York. Morris and Burne-Jones redecorated the Chapel in 1875 to 1878. It is the Howard family's private home, open to the public since 1952, with more than 269,000 visitors in 2019.
