The Carré d'Art stands on the Place de la Maison Carrée in Nîmes and holds a contemporary art museum and the city library. Norman Foster won a 1984 competition among twelve invited architects, including Frank Gehry, Jean Nouvel and César Pelli. It opened in May 1993. The article gives no style and no client, so High-tech is an assumption.
The building has nine stories, half of them sunk into the ground. It uses glass, concrete and steel. The lower levels hold archive storage and a cinema.
It was built as part of refurbishing the square around the Maison Carrée, a Roman temple from the first century BC, which it faces directly across the square.
