Cagliari Cathedral is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and Saint Cecilia and is the seat of the archbishop of Cagliari. The Pisans built the church in the thirteenth century in their stronghold, Castel di Castro. It gained cathedral status in 1258 after the Pisans destroyed Santa Igia, the capital of the Giudicato of Cagliari, and its cathedral. It was originally Pisan-Romanesque.

A transept and a Gothic mullioned window were added in the fourteenth century. From 1669 to 1704 the interior and facade were restructured in the Baroque style. The old facade was demolished in the early twentieth century, and the current Neo-Romanesque facade, inspired by Pisa Cathedral, was built in the 1930s.

The crypt Sanctuary of the Martyrs has 179 niches for relics. A fifteenth-century Flemish triptych is attributed to Rogier van der Weyden.
