The Burj Khalifa in Downtown Dubai was designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, with Adrian Smith as chief architect, for Emaar Properties. Construction began in January 2004, on the 6th in the infobox and the 12th in the text. It opened on January 4, 2010, and was inaugurated on January 23, 2011.

The infobox lists neo-futurism, while the text says the design derives from regional Islamic architecture. It has a Y-shaped plan with a buttressed core and 27 setbacks, built of reinforced concrete, structural steel, aluminum and glass. Its architectural height is 2,717 feet (828 m) with 163 floors, and the spire length is 242.5 or 244 m, depending on the source.

It was first called Burj Dubai and was renamed for Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan after federal financial support during the Great Recession. It mixes residences, offices, a 304-room Armani Hotel, restaurants and observation decks. Advance tickets are available.
