Burchard Hall, at 1327 Perry Street, is the second main building of Virginia Tech's School of Architecture + Design. Virginia Tech's building page says it was completed in 1998. A university news article dates the 42,000-square-foot (3,900-square-meter) reinforced concrete addition to 1999.
It was built to relieve a severe shortage of space for the architecture and industrial design programs. Matthew W. Shriver, a 1985 Virginia Tech graduate, was lead architect. The building sits below grade to preserve Cowgill Plaza. Four pyramidal skylights light the studios below, and a stairway from a kiosk in the plaza leads down.
It holds studio space, faculty offices and workshops for ceramics, plaster, graphics and digital media. It is named for Charles Henry Burchard, the founding dean of the College of Architecture and Urban Studies from 1964 to 1979.
