Brough Castle is a ruin in the village of Brough, Cumbria, England. It stands on the site of Verterae, a Roman fort of about three acres that guarded the Stainmore Pass across the Pennines. William Rufus built the castle around 1092 within the old fort.

Scottish forces under William the Lion took the outer defenses and burned the keep in 1174, during the Great Revolt against Henry II. Henry II then had a square stone keep built in the 1180s, and work for King John from 1199 to 1202 rebuilt the whole castle in stone. The Clifford family held it for centuries. Robert Clifford built Clifford's Tower around 1308.

A fire after a Christmas feast in 1521 destroyed the habitable parts. Lady Anne Clifford restored the castle from 1659 to 1661, and a second fire in 1666 ended its use as a home. English Heritage runs it today.
