Black Star Square, also called Independence Square, is a public square on Independence Avenue in Accra, Ghana. The Ghanaian architect Theo Lawson designed it, and Kwame Nkrumah commissioned it to celebrate independence. It is built of concrete and stone. Construction ended in 1961, in time for the state visit of Queen Elizabeth II.
Three monuments mark the struggle for independence: the Independence Arch, the Liberation Day Monument and the Black Star Gate. A statue of a soldier faces the arch and honors Ghanaians who died fighting for independence. The black star is linked to Marcus Garvey's Black Star Line. The stands seat 30,000.
The square hosts the annual Independence Day parade on March 6, along with civic and military parades and national gatherings. It was the site of the 2007 Golden Jubilee, and of state funerals for presidents John Atta Mills and Jerry Rawlings.
