The Bishop's Palace stands at 3 Franciszkańska Street in the Old Town of Kraków, across from the Franciscan Church. It has been the residence of the bishops of Kraków since the late 14th century, and it is the seat of the metropolitan Curia. It was rebuilt after a fire in 1462.
Bishop Piotr Gembicki added a staircase and rusticated portals in 1642 to 1647. Gabriel Słoński added the courtyard loggia around 1567, and Tomasz Pryliński supervised a renovation in 1881 to 1884. The building mixes 19th-century architecture with Polish Renaissance and Baroque decoration.
It is best known as the home of Karol Wojtyła, who lived there from 1958 to 1978, before he became Pope John Paul II. He spoke to crowds from the window above the entrance.
