Birmingham New Street station was rebuilt in the Gateway Plus project, a 550 million pound redevelopment that opened in September 2015. Foreign Office Architects was chosen in September 2008 from six shortlisted firms. Work began on April 26, 2010. Half the new concourse opened on April 28, 2013, and the full concourse opened on September 20, 2015.

The new concourse is three and a half times larger than the 1960s one. The plans included a domed atrium at its center to bring in natural light, plus new escalators, lifts, a new facade and new entrances. The Pallasades Shopping Centre was refurbished as Grand Central, with a John Lewis store.

Simon Jenkins called it retail-centered but a vast improvement. The station had 36.6 million entries and exits in 2024 to 2025.
