It was built to house holdings evacuated from the western Allied occupation zones, and was planned as a modern research library for the collection from 1946 onward. It was renovated from 1999 to 2001 and holds historical monument status.
The article lists its address as Potsdamer Platz 33. It is due to close in 2030 for an eleven-year renovation, which plans the removal of about 30 tons of harmful material, including asbestos.
