Berlin Brandenburg Airport lies at Schönefeld, about 18 kilometers southeast of central Berlin. The gmp firm designed Terminal 1 and was later dismissed. Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH, owned by Berlin, Brandenburg and the federal government, is the client. Construction started in 2006, and the airport opened commercially on October 31, 2020. It was planned to open in October 2011.

Terminal 1 is U-shaped and sits between two runways above an underground station. The main pier is 715 meters long. The airport can theoretically handle 46 million passengers a year.

The main cause of delay was a fire protection system that failed acceptance tests. Costs rose from a 2.83 billion euro budget in 2009 to 5.4 billion by 2015.
