The Basilica of San Giacomo Maggiore stands on Via Zamboni in Bologna and serves a monastery of Augustinian friars. Hermits led by Blessed John the Good of Modena founded a community here around 1247 and dedicated the church to St. James the Greater. Construction of the current church began in 1267, and the building was finished in 1315 and consecrated in 1344. It is sober Romanesque with Gothic elements, such as pointed windows.
The Bentivoglio family built the Bentivoglio Chapel from 1463 to 1468 and added a portico from 1477 to 1481. The chapel has a majolica pavement by the Della Robbia workshop, an altarpiece by Francesco Raibolini and a tomb by Jacopo della Quercia.
The Oratory of Santa Cecilia has frescoes by Francesco Francia, Lorenzo Costa and Amico Aspertini. The friars were expelled in the French occupation and returned in 1824.
