Bäckaskog Castle is in Kristianstad Municipality in Scania, southern Sweden. It sits on an isthmus between Lake Ivö, Scania's largest lake, and Lake Oppmanna.
The site began as a monastery built in the 13th century. The Danish Crown closed the monastery in 1537 during the Reformation, and in the 16th century it was converted into a castle. Between 1584 and 1653 the noblemen Henrik Ramel and his son Henrik Ramel the Younger gave it its present appearance.
The castle is open to the public, and its courtyard is among its best-known sights. The long history of the place, from monastery to noble residence, is visible in the way the old and later buildings stand together.
