Auckland Art Gallery stands at the corner of Wellesley and Kitchener Streets. The Melbourne architects John Harry Grainger and Charles D'Ebro designed the original building, completed in 1887 with an extension in 1916. FJMT with Archimedia designed the 2011 expansion. The article calls the original style early French Renaissance, in brick and plaster, with a six-story clock tower.
The gallery was founded in 1888 as New Zealand's first permanent art gallery. It reopened on September 3, 2011 after closing in late 2007. The redevelopment cost NZ$113 million, and exhibition space grew by 50 percent. It cut the building's 17 floor levels to six.
It won the 2013 World Building of the Year at the World Architecture Festival.
