The Aspen Art Museum at 637 East Hyman Avenue was designed by Shigeru Ban, winner of the 2014 Pritzker Prize. It was his first museum in the United States. The museum was founded in 1979 and worked for years in a converted hydroelectric plant on North Mill Street. The new building opened on August 9, 2014. The article names no client, style or construction dates.
It covers 33,000 square feet over four levels. It has six galleries, a rooftop sculpture garden and an outdoor commons. Named features include the Grand Stair, a moving glass room elevator, a woven wood screen, a wood roof truss and walkable skylights.
The city's ZGreen program certified the museum in March 2009. It is non-collecting, and it runs an artist-in-residence program started in 2006. The article gives no hours or admission.
