The Art and Architecture Building at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, stands at 1715 Volunteer Boulevard. McCarty Bullock Holsaple, the Knoxville firm led by Bruce McCarty and his son Douglas H. McCarty, designed it after a 1977 national competition drew about 45 submissions. It was finished in fall 1981 and holds the College of Architecture and Design and the School of Art.

The four-story concrete and glass building has about 161,150 square feet of interior space and cost $9 million. Cantilevered loft-style studios have operable ribbon windows and exposed concrete walls. A four-story atrium has concrete office pods cantilevered from the core, a sunken sculpture garden and red concrete floors.

Construction ran 22 months late after the general contractor had financial trouble, and legal disputes lasted about four years. SAH Archipedia calls it perhaps the best example of Brutalist architecture in Tennessee.
