The Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership is a single-story, 10,000 square foot (930 square meter) building on the Kalamazoo College campus in Michigan. Jeanne Gang of Studio Gang designed it. It sits at the corner of Academy Street and Monroe Street.
Its curved walls are built of wood masonry, using white cedar that was grown and sustainably harvested in Michigan. The college describes this as a low-carbon, highly insulating method and says it is the first use of the technique at an institutional scale. Three transparent facades face the campus, a grove of trees and the neighborhood.
The $5 million building was funded by a gift from alumnus and trustee Jon Stryker. It gives students, faculty, visiting scholars, social justice leaders and the public a place to meet. The college set LEED Gold certification as its construction target.
