Architecture Hall began as the University of Nebraska's library, designed by Mendelssohn, Fisher and Lawrie in the Richardsonian Romanesque style. The building was dedicated on December 10, 1895. It is built of Colorado sandstone topped with red brick and has 31,000 square feet (2,880 square meters) over three and a half stories.

The main building measures 130 by 65 feet (40 by 20 meters), with a north wing of 50 by 75 feet (15 by 23 meters). A. Rosenburg of Omaha won the construction bid at $110,000. The library moved to Love Library in 1945. The architecture department arrived in 1946, and the building was briefly called Navy Hall.

A $4.3 million renovation in 1985 to 1987 added a glass atrium linking it to the adjacent Old Law College. A 21,000-square-foot (1,950-square-meter) expansion followed on the northwest edge in 2024. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 6, 1975.
