The Architecture Building opened in 1971 as the permanent home of the University of Maryland's architecture school in College Park. Fisher Nes Campbell Partners, the Baltimore firm of architect Charles Nes, designed it.
Before the move, the school worked from Building DD, a temporary World War II structure that Dean John Hill renovated in 1967 for offices, classrooms and a slide library. By 1971 its temporary campus had grown to include four more temporary buildings.
Hill's year-by-year curricular plan, which capped the school at about 300 students and limited course sections, served as the basis for the building's design. The school's own history does not describe the building's appearance. The program marked its 50th anniversary with a symposium in 2018.
