The School of Architecture, Art, and Historic Preservation building stands on the waterfront campus of Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island. Kite, Palmer Associates of Providence completed it in 1985. SAH Archipedia says it takes a looser approach than the plain, cube-like campus buildings of 1967.
The firm, now KITE, made a master plan in 2003 and designed an addition built on its original 1984 design. The addition supports interdisciplinary work and adds graduate studio and support space.
The addition reads as new, with generous glazing and simple geometric forms. Free-standing masonry piers join it to the original building and carry shading louvers. Its Trespa rainscreen cladding was one of the first uses of that system in the United States. Inside are a 99-seat lecture hall and an indoor exhibition gallery, and outside is a sculpture court.
