The house has two wings at right angles. The eastern part dates from 1454, the house was largely rebuilt in 1686 and the northwest wing was added in 1695. Curtain walls enclose a courtyard, with a battlemented gateway and outer walls of sandstone. The Earls of Thanet formed the classical mansion house.
The constable surrendered to William the Lion in 1174 without a fight. The Clifford family held it for nearly 400 years from 1264, and Lady Anne Clifford restored it from 1651 to 1653.
