The Apollo Theater on 125th Street in Harlem was designed by George Keister in a Classical Revival style, for C. J. Stumpf and H. J. Langhoff of Milwaukee. The producers Jules Hurtig and Harry Seamon developed and ran it as a burlesque house. The infobox gives groundbreaking in 1913 and opening in 1914, but the text says the first Columbia show was on December 17, 1913.
The facade is white glazed terracotta on the second and third stories, with Ionic and Tuscan capitals. The L-shaped plan has a long narrow lobby, a domed ceiling, two balconies and side boxes. Seating figures conflict, with about 1,500 in the infobox and 1,536 in the early 2010s.
It was landmarked in 1983, renovated from 1985 to 1988, and its facade was restored from 2002 to 2005. The nonprofit Apollo Theater Foundation runs it and hosts Amateur Night.
